The City of Stamford offers unparalleled academic opportunities.  From personalized private pre-schools to more than two dozen major colleges and universities within a 60-mile radius, Stamford offers an abundance of support, resources, and engagement for students of every age, ability and learning level.

The vision of the Stamford Public Schools (SPS) is to challenge, inspire and prepare all students to be productive contributing members of society.  SPS offers students a learning experience rich in cultural diversity and reflective of the global society in which they will work and live. Just as members of the Stamford community come from many cultural backgrounds and geographic locations — so do our students, as demonstrated by the more than 70 different languages spoken in the homes of SPS families.

SPS encompasses more than 16,000 students, over 1,500 professionals, and 21 schools, including seven magnet schools and three International Baccalaureate sites. SPS has a total of 13 elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools. SPS utilizes small group instruction, learning centers, Scientific Research-Based Intervention and a tiered framework of supports and enrichment to offer a full range of academic and co-curricular opportunities.  In support of the district mission to cultivate productive habits of mind, body and heart, each building employs a unique combination of methods and areas of focus, tailored to their own community, staff and students; including:

  • Arts & Problem Solving
  • Higher Order Thinking
  • Leadership Through Service
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math
  • 21st Century Skills (creativity, critical thinking, communication & collaboration)

Stamford’s three public high schools offer students a vast array of courses of study and concentration.  SPS is among the top 4 districts in the State of Connecticut for the number of AP courses offered. In addition, Stamford High is one of just 9 Connecticut high schools offering the increasingly popular International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), joining 157 countries globally. Stamford students place in the 94th percentile of the national SAT ranking and have access to a full complement of college-level courses through partnerships with UCONN, Norwalk Community College and various distance learning organizations.

Taking advantage of our city’s vibrant business environment and rich community resources, Stamford also offers extensive real world learning opportunities through internship programs, corporate mentoring and business immersion experiences.
